CME H4MIDI WC

i recently decided to build a DAWless setup, and this guy, here, basically covered most of my needs, for the MIDI side of things.
it’s not 5 stars for me, because i’m not yet sure about the USB devices it will allow, through its USB-Host port, with a multi-port hub.
My Keystep works fine, as well as a couple of synths.
but my USB-EWI wind controller won’t work and neither will my Roland HPD-20 ( through the USB port. it works through the MIDI DIN though)
It would make sense if the EWI sent Audio through USB, but it is a mere MIDI controller, so i don’t understand why it won’t transmit any signal, through the CME H4.
i haven’t upgraded it with the bluetooth chip, but i will, and i will post a new review, when i do.
So far, the Hx MIDI app is great for mapping and routing the signal_ really powerful, and useful .

I bought this unit to act as a MIDI host. Before this unit - to play an analogue synth (DIN midi) with a USB midi keyboard I needed to connect them via Ableton + PC as a midi host. This unit replaces Ableton and the laptop in that scenario making "set up and play" much more straightforward. It's a small, well made unit. Downloading the software and updating the firmware was easy and quick, and then it was simply plug and play. Customer service was excellent - I am new to midi so I had a few newbie questions and they were very patient with me! If you use the 9v power supply rather than USB C 5v - be aware your 9v supply (like a guitar pedal supply) needs to be of reasonable quality, not expensive - just reasonable. When I used a very cheap one it introduced artefacts to the midi messages.

Ich war auf der Suche nach einer Möglichkeit diverse Paramter meines Synths mit 5-Pin Midi mittels eines USB-Midi Controllers anzusteuern und idealerweise auch gleich mehrere Parameter auf einmal (z.B. mit einem Encoder gleichzeitig die Verzerrung anheben dafür aber Lautstärke geringfügig absenken). Es scheint aber auf dem Markt derzeit nur Geräte zu geben die entweder das eine (USB MIDI Host) oder das andere (MIDI Mapping) können. Ich war kurz davor mir zwei unterschiedliche Geräte zu bestellen als ich über das H4MIDI WC gestoßen bin.

Die Grundfunktionen des H4MIDI WC (USB Midi auf 5-Pin Midi durchschleifen) ist sehr einfach und auch ohne vorherigen Software-Einsatz nutzbar. Für die Umsetzung anspruchsvollerer Ideen muss man allerdings an den PC. Die Software dazu ist etwas spartanisch und man muss sich gewisse Dinge erst selber erschließen, ist aber funktional und recht zweckdienlich. Daher 4 Sterne bei der Bedienung.

Trotz meiner Vergabe von 5 Sternen in Bezug auf die Features gibt es ein paar Beschränkungen, die der H4MIDI WC (noch?) nicht kann. Da er ansonsten aber, wie oben beschrieben einen sehr großen Funktionsumfang, und das bei einem relativ geringem Preis, hat bekommt er von mir nicht weniger als das.
* man kann zwar alle möglichen MIDI Nachrichten auch in Pitch Bend und Aftertouch umwandeln, aber nicht in Breath Controller oder Mod Wheel - sehr nischig, ich weiß XD
* es stehen einem für die Umwandlung von MIDI Nachrichten "nur" 16 Mappings zur Verfügung. Derzeit bin ich da noch nicht am Limit, aber die Slots füllen sich schnell. Vor allem wenn man mehrere Geräte untereinander verbinden will.

Als ich das Gerät auf dem Tisch hatte ist mir auch noch eine weitere Idee gekommen: nicht nur den Synth kann ich damit ansteuern, sondern über die USB-C Verbindung kann ich, dank der Mappings, über ein paar der Knöpfe auf dem Controller Szenen in OBS umschalten. Somit wird mein kleiner Controller dank des H4MIDI WC nun auch zur Video Schaltzentrale. Wenn ich den WIDI Core installiere und meinen Airstep Footcontroller auch noch anschließe liegt die Weltherrschaft wahrscheinlich in greifbarer Nähe ;)

Fazit: Top Produkt welches eine Lücke im Marktsegment und mein Herz mit Freude füllt.
