I'm super happy with them, it's a big step up from my old Kali LP-6s, I can say it's the perfect upgrade into the mid range of monitors. Everything about them is better than my old boxes. More clarity, separation, detail, dynamics(they do have less bass than some other 7" monitors I've heard, but it's way clearer and punchier, so you actually hear it and mix it properly)
a few points:
- they're the only 'mid-forward' speakers in this price range, no v-shape in tone, no harshness in the highs or hyped bass. This means: great translation.
- LYD-7s are quite small for a 7" monitor, nice surprise.
- they have that +10hz switch to go lower in the subs, but I avoid using it, on busy mixes it makes them sound a bit 'overwhelmed'
- crossover is at 4.2 kHz so the vocals go totally on the woofer, which makes them sound sublime.
- if you're a bedroom producer like myself, I urge you to invest in room EQ and a couple of panels at least.
6 months after using them I got a 9s subwoofer(as Dynaudio say it was made to work with the LYD line). I really like the bass on the LYDs: tight and puncy(not boomy), but it's rather quiet, so I hoped that the 9s sub will fix that and hopefully have that same flavor of tight and fast bass, since it's a sealed design. And it really does, no issue there, but my surprise was with the speakers: highpassing them at 80hz to let the sub take care of the lows really opened up these speakers: the 7" driver has now more space for the low-mids and mids.
I'm super happy with the low end now(have basstraps in my 4x4m room, and also used REW to get all the speakers aligned, and use room eq from ik)
However the improved sound of the speakers is really what's doing it for me now. They're clearer, more crisp, transients and overall detail is better. I put this on the fact that the woofer of the LYD7s had to handle everything from 45hz to 4.2khz and it is quite a bit for a 7". They're another speaker now that the bass duties have been unloaded to the sub. It's quite the difference too, not one you have to A/B several times to get a glimpse of. If you do get the LYD7s, but then at some point in the future want to upgrade to something even better, please get the sub first for them (if you have a decent enough room), you won't regret it.
Hope this helps!
