Thon Studio Side Rack XL 10U beech

I was looking for a studio rack that could fit under my desk, remain easy to move, and offer at least 12 rack units. This rack meets those requirements perfectly and is very comfortable to use.

That said, you need to pay close attention to the depth of your equipment (including rear connections) and how you position your gear. On the angled rack section, the lowest slot can interfere with the bottom rack units, so you may need to leave one position empty depending on your setup.

The three bottom rack spaces are ideal for items like a drawer or a power conditioner, but less practical for standard rack units, as the controls can be harder to see and access.

One of the standout features is the ability to mount equipment on the rear side. This is particularly useful for a rack power strip, cable management, or I/O connections.

The flat top surface on this version is also very convenient for placing additional equipment or accessories.

The angled design not only improves ergonomics but can also help with airflow. For example, adding a 1U 19-inch ventilation panel can enhance cooling, especially for heat-generating gear like tube equipment.

Build quality is solid, and assembly is straightforward. The only downside I noticed was the packaging, which could be improved. The box arrived slightly damaged with limited protection, although fortunately the wooden panels were not affected.

Another point to consider is availability: this version is not kept in stock and must be built to order. Additionally, it is only available in oak or beech finishes, unlike other Thon racks that also come in maple.

Das Rack kommt als Bausatz. Für jeden, der schon einmal ein IKEA Regal zusammengebaut hat ist das aber kein Problem. Das Material ist schlicht: Spanplatte mit Kunststoff-Furnier, sieht aber dennoch gut aus. Wer edles Echtholz bevorzugt muss erheblich tiefer in die Tasche greifen. Allerdings sind die knapp 400,- €, die für das Rack aufgerufen werden, auch nicht grade als Sonderangebot anzusehen.

Ich habe zwei dieser Racks, die seitlich neben der Workstation stehen. Der Einbauwinkel ist nach meiner Ansicht perfekt gewählt, sodass sich die Geräte optimal bedienen lassen. Die Muttern in den Rack-Schienen lassen sich stufenlos verschieben. Dadurch kann man zwischen Geräten mit höherer Wärmeentwicklung jeweils einen kleinen Luftspalt lassen, ohne jedesmal eine ganze Höheneinheit zu verlieren. Sehr praktisch.

Ein ganz erheblicher Vorteil dieser Racks besteht darin, dass Thoman die Serie über sehr viele Jahre unverändert anbietet. Dadurch hat man die Gewähr, jederzeit weitere Racks ergänzen zu können, ohne, dass die Bauform oder die Farbe von vorher gekauften Racks abweicht. Das finde ich sehr gut.
