Perfect for my needs
zorglub76 08.03.2021
First of all, I don't have a producer's ears. So when I say that there's absolutely no noise when using these preamps, take it with a grain of salt.
I have a specific problem that I tried to solve with the FetHead, and I solved it easily. The problem is that I'm getting some digital noise in my Focusrite Scarlett whenever I turn gain passed 1 o'clock. I don't know if it's a psu, or the nearby laptop or something else, but I couldn't get rid of it.
Now, with the FetHeads, I pre-amplify my mic, and I need just a slight gain from Scarlett, so the noise is gone! The sound is exactly the same as without the FetHead, just louder. I hear no distortion or noise. I'm using Lewitt small diaphragm mics that are especially noiseless, but I hope the others would behave the same.
I'd recommend FetHead as a cheap solution to any gain related problems you might have.

perfect for hydrophone drop rigs
LutherD 16.04.2026
I use these preamps for a very particular purpose. I sometimes record with some DIY self built hydrophones (the gladys hydrophones), and in more quiet environments their output is very low, barely raising above the noise floor. This preamp solves this. Especially handy when I leave the hydrophones overnight with a Zoom F3 drop rig, a recorder where you can't really set the input level. The TritonAudio FetHead Phantom provides a clean and transparent gain and I can hear the signal from the gladys much more clearly, and I have less work in post. These preamps have been on some rather rought and adventurous trips, but they handle that without any problem. I also love the very small formfactor, which is very handy in field recording. I did subtract one point since the logo of one of them came off, but that didn't influence the sound.
